Spy

Wednesday, win, 9pm, MA15+ (2015) The comedy genre has been given a facelift of late, doing away with generic, slapstick comedy and heralding a new era of features that are as entertaining as they are intelligent. Much of that effect can be attributed to Spy’s leading lady, Melissa McCarthy (pictured). In her latest flick she plays a maligned pencil-pusher working for the CIA, who’s ten overlooked in favour of the shoot-em-up agents in the field. But when her partner (Jude Law) goes missing in action it’s up to her and her undercover alter egos to infiltrate a smuggling ring led by a notorious arms dealer (a brilliant Ros Byrne). Jason Statham is at his comedic best as compromised top agent Rick Ford.
