Balonne soccer stars hit the pitch for State Titles
FOOTBALL: Local football stars hit the pitch in Hervey Bay recently for the State Soccer Titles.
Chevelle Adams, Nick Cuffe, Jackson Hearn, Edward Rogan, Jasper Wilkinson and Clancy Wright took to the field in the Queensland 10-12 years South West Teams.
Chevelle Adams was strong in defence through the four-day carnival and attacked strongly.
The girls’ team was unlucky not to come away with a win from the carnival after being called offside by the referee after an attempt at goal in their game against North West.
The five Balonne boys performed well and Nick Cuffe was also named captain of the boys’ team.
Jasper Wilkinson proved to be a pest in defence, popping up in what seemed to be everywhere on the field to save shots on goal.
Kicks out of their own goal area were a strong point for Jackson Hearn, much to the delight of the South West spectators as Jackson cleared the ball regularly.
Jackson was also strong as keeper, saving several goals for the South West team.
Captain Cuffe proved to be a handful in defence, tackling opposition players with great skill.
Striker Edward Rogan was fabulous in attack and missed the goal by just centimetres in a hard fought game against North West.
The strong boot of Clancy Wright had the ball heading down-field on several occasions.
Coach Matt Franklin said he was extremely proud of the boys over the four days and continued to praise them for their never say die attitude.
Highlights of the carnival came on and off the field, with a game of beach gridiron and also many morning teas and lunches. Cool down matches against the coach and manager also proved to be a highlight.
The boys’ favourite move of the carnival was a secret weapon by Mr Franklin called ‘the pig chase’ and after the call of ‘uppa’ was made by the coach, all players (including the keeper) swarmed the goal area for a shot of goal.
