New firefighters tested to their limits

Balonne Beacon - - BEST OF THE WEST -

THREE new firefighting recruits undertook a two-day road crash rescue course at the Dalby Fire Station over the weekend to ensure they will be prepared when their time at the coal face arrives.

The rookies – Brian McKeesick from Injune, Russell Smith from Crows Nest and Amy Todd from Tara – are ready to go back to their respective fire departments fully equipped to handle any crash situation.

Dalby fire captain Peter Mauch said the RCR course was crucial as firefighters came across entrapments regularly.

“Courses like this are to ensure the health and safety of us and the public,” Mr Mauch said.

“RCR is important because it’s about

60 per cent of the work we do.

The trio were placed in multiple rescue situations where they had to decide which tools and methods would be best suited for each situation, all while experienced firefighter David Kucks kept a watchful eye on them.

Mr Mauch said Dalby was in the fortunate position of having a full capacity of firefighters at the moment but if anyone was interested in joining he said they could submit an expression of interest through the website www.qfes.qld. gov.au.
