The incredible true story of con man Frank Abagnale Jr (Leonardo DiCaprio) proves the perfect subject for Steven Spielberg to helm his most light-hearted yet compelling film in years. In the early ’60s, 16-year-old Abagnale flees his home and creates myriad false identities (and cheques) to charm and procure millions from those he encounters. But he doesn’t reckon on the skills of FBI agent Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks), who is forever on his trail. Spielberg’s superlative story effortlessly alternates between genial comedy and serious drama. DiCaprio exudes an infectious self-confidence, while a low-key Hanks is terrific.
