With Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects )at the helm, the eponymous Marvel Comics heroes are dutifully vivified on film, presented with intelligence, wit and style. At the story’s centre is the charismatic Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), who is inducted into a mysterious academy that benevolently harbours “mutants” (humans with extraordinary powers). Singer succeeds in using an ethical and moral backbone with which to address the narrative’s driving issue: the dangers of persecution arising from the relationship between humans and mutants. It’s a visually thrilling and cerebral look at good versus evil.
