Sandgate class of ‘97 reunion
High school reunion for 1993-97 Sandgate cohort
IT has been 20 years since the class of 1997 left Sandgate High but the former students will be together again at their school reunion next month.
Sandgate District State High School (SDSHS) 1993-1997 cohort including teachers are invited to attend Eaton’s Hill Hotel on Saturday, October 14 from 6pm.
Reunion organiser Kelly Radloff (nee Backen) said the reunion is open to anyone who started Year 8 in 1993, graduated Year 12 in 1997 or attended any of the years in between and the teachers.
“I loved high school. Everyone in our classes got along. We were all friendly; everyone was friends with everyone. That’s what made it memorable,” Mrs Radloff said.
“It’s been way too long. We can’t wait to catch up and hear everyone’s stories and we hope to get some great photos. We’ve already connected with over 150 people but we want to make sure everyone who attended during those years knows the reunion is happening and can hopefully come along.
“If your are parents or grandparents or family of people who went to
Sandgate High during those years, please tell them about the reunion.
“Anyone who has old photos please email them to me and they can be included in the screen show on the night.
“We have lots of great memories from those years. Our cohort competed in the rock eisteddfod three times in the five years and we made it to the state finals to perform at Boondall Entertainment Centre in 1996. We also won the Brisbane schools’ AFL and netball finals in 1997.”
Jillian Neyland (nee Dutton) is looking forward to catching up with old school friends.
“I remember they gathered our whole class under a big tree near the oval, told us goodbye, and we all just stood around a bit speechless and shell-shocked. Twenty years later it will be exciting to see everyone again, and to share stories about our lives thus far.
“Most of the reunion organisation and communication has been done via a closed Facebook group and we have a few teachers are coming at this stage.
“We had 222 students enrolled in Year 8 in 1993, and 159 graduated from Year 12. Many students left in Year 10 to pursue alternative educations.
“I have been living and teaching science in the Northern Territory since 2004. I haven’t seen most people since the last day of high school, although Facebook has been a great way to get back in touch with old friends.
“We are hoping to connect with more past students or their families; we are reaching out to those who have not yet heard about the reunion.
“Several people travelling from interstate to attend the event including former school vice captain Ben Coxen from Launceston, Tasmania and I am coming from Alice Springs,
“A quick look at the job title of past students on the group Facebook page shows the diversity of life paths taken; teachers, health workers, social workers, legal and para-legal workers, banking and finance, HR, artists, tradies and labourers, government, administrative, transport, private business owners, stay at home mums, fitness professionals, adventure guides and university staff.
“One student Jayson Shipston works as a radio announcer in Mackay and Nerissa Henderson will attend the event despite the fact she is the new mother of triplets. Simone Nalatu, our former school vice captain, played netball for the Queensland Firebirds.
“Many past students have expressed nervousness at attending the reunion. There are a few high school sweethearts who since have married and had children,” she said.
To be part of the reunion request to join the closed group ‘Sandgate DSHS Class of 1997 - 20 Year Reunion’ on Facebook. For more information email email@example.com.
We’ve already connected with over 150 people but we want to make sure everyone who attended during those years knows the reunion is happening and can hopefully come along.
