Fire zone to crime scene
POLICE declared the large factory fire in Virginia as a crime scene following a massive emergency service operation on Sunday, September 9.
Around 3.30pm police and emergency services attended the large fire that had broken out in an industrial building on Pritchard Road and put in an exclusion zone around the area under the Public Safety Preservation Act.
A number of nearby businesses were evacuated and two occupants of the burning building were confirmed to have safely self-evacuated from it.
Residents in the nearby area were advised to stay indoors and close windows due to the toxic nature of the smoke.
The exclusion zone was reduced at around 6.42pm to the area encompassing Pritchard Road between Shannon Place and Sandgate Road and was finally removed at 11.10pm.
Police remained at the site until fire scientific investigators attended to determine the cause of the fire.
Fire crews also remained at the site hosing down the area to prevent re-ignition.
