Fire zone to crime scene

PO­LICE de­clared the large fac­tory fire in Vir­ginia as a crime scene fol­low­ing a mas­sive emer­gency ser­vice op­er­a­tion on Sun­day, Septem­ber 9.

Around 3.30pm po­lice and emer­gency ser­vices at­tended the large fire that had bro­ken out in an in­dus­trial build­ing on Pritchard Road and put in an ex­clu­sion zone around the area un­der the Pub­lic Safety Preser­va­tion Act.

A num­ber of nearby busi­nesses were evac­u­ated and two oc­cu­pants of the burn­ing build­ing were con­firmed to have safely self-evac­u­ated from it.

Res­i­dents in the nearby area were ad­vised to stay in­doors and close win­dows due to the toxic na­ture of the smoke.

The ex­clu­sion zone was re­duced at around 6.42pm to the area en­com­pass­ing Pritchard Road be­tween Shannon Place and Sandgate Road and was fi­nally re­moved at 11.10pm.

Po­lice re­mained at the site un­til fire sci­en­tific in­ves­ti­ga­tors at­tended to de­ter­mine the cause of the fire.

Fire crews also re­mained at the site hos­ing down the area to pre­vent re-ig­ni­tion.
