HOW DID YOU COME TO START ARTICOLO? Bribe International, our sister glassware company, was showing at Maison&objet years ago. I had a moment when I put a large vase upside down over my hand, held it up and said ‘let’s get into lighting’. Back in Australia we designed our first light, the ‘Lumi’ table lamp, and took it to Maison&objet the next year where it attracted a lot of interest – that was the start of a wonderful journey into exploring the art of light. YOUR ENDURING CREATIVE INFLUENCES? Belgian architectural design best references my own design style: black steel and casts or greys, neutrals and smokes. DESCRIBE YOUR SPACE? Light-filled, serene, cocooning, contemplative, it’s a quiet yet beautiful place to design uninterrupted. At night when the terrace off the showroom is lit, the effect is magical, with filtered light dancing off the Boston ivy-covered wall. YOUR DESK ESSENTIALS? My inspiration tears I reference every day, a mix of fashion, art, architecture, photography, design – and share on our Pinterest. Pinned on a board in front of my desk they are ever-changing. My desk is my sanctuary. I create there. My ‘Lumi’ lamp casts a superb light, creating a space where the design process just flows. HOW DOES YOUR WORKPLACE REFLECT YOUR WORK? I like my office to feel like a home away from home. The studio is a space that’s full of laughter, shared stories and good fun. For me it is somewhere inspiring and where I can generate new designs. DESCRIBE THE VIEW FROM YOUR OFFICE? Right now it is a brilliant flaming autumnal red, as the ivy wall changes with the seasons. It’s a wonderful ever-changing wallpaper that grounds me in the passing of time. DESCRIBE A TYPICAL DAY? I wake to US and European enquiries, and respond before the Australian workday begins. I race between our factory and showroom appointments. I try to find some quiet time after the ‘day’ has finished to do the deep thinking which gives my process the creative energy it needs. WHAT DREAM DESK PIECE WOULD YOU BUY NOW? My son just left to travel abroad so my desk piece would be a photo of him. IF YOUR OFFICE WERE LOCATED ELSEWHERE, WHERE WOULD THAT BE? New York or London. Purely from an aspirational aspect, I love Milan; Potafiori is one of my favourite shops and I’d love to be located there – surrounded by stylish Italians and fantastic food. articoloarchitecturallighting.com.au.
