Defibrillator arrives at bank
Bridge St is now better equipped to handle cardiac emergencies thanks to the installation of a community defibrillator at Bendigo Bank Benalla last week.
The $2300 defibrillator was cofunded by Bendigo Bank Benalla, Benalla Lions Club, Benalla RSL sub-branch, Benalla Rural City and community support.
Bendigo Bank Benalla branch manager Jenny Lee said the idea came after the local bank became part of the ‘‘Defib Your Club for Life’’ group two years ago.
‘‘The aim was to get as many defibs into communities or sporting events (as possible),’’ Ms Lee said.
‘‘My team has always been concerned about how busy the street is and that there’s not one available to the general public.’’
Ms Lee said the bank approached other community organisations, who were only too happy to support the cause.
‘‘If we can help save a life, which the unit does I believe, then it’s very important,’’ Benalla Lions Club president Peter Poels said.
The defibrillator was unveiled on Friday and is the only one in the central business area.
Benalla Rural City Mayor Barbara Alexander said it was important residents knew about its lo- cation, so it could save lives if required.
‘‘We are an ageing population and people can go up the street and have a little attack,’’ Cr Alexander said.
‘‘It’s alright having it, but you’ve got to know where to go.’’
Benalla RSL sub-branch president Jeff Lewis said the group was so inspired by the idea that they were going to install a defibrillator at the RSL rooms.
‘‘We’ve got quite a few Second World War veterans at 92 and 88, so we thought it would be a good cause to donate to,’’ he said.
‘‘I think really all neighbourhoods should have one in a central place.’’
Ms Lee said the bank was very grateful to the organisations that supported the cause, as well as community members who raised about $1800 through Bendigo Bank’s raffle.
‘‘Bendigo Bank continually tries to look beyond banking for solutions and support opportunities to individuals and the communities we operate in,’’ Ms Lee said.
‘‘We appreciate the organisations that care about the community like us.’’
The remaining funds raised by the community will be set aside for Bendigo Bank Benalla’s next community project.
Team effort: Benalla Rural City Mayor Barbara Alexander, Bendigo Bank Benalla branch manager Jenny Lee, Benalla RSL sub-branch vice president Delano Dube, Benalla Lions Club president Peter Poels, Bendigo Bank Benalla customer relationship manager Georgie Warner, Bendigo Bank Benalla customer service officers Helen Nunan and Heather Edgar, and Benalla RSL sub-branch president Jeff Lewis launch the new defibrillator.
