A theatre enthusiast for decades, Mr Jenkins said he was looking forward to the challenge of directing.

‘‘I had reached the point where I wasn’t going to be cast as the leading male any more ... I wanted to stay involved,’’ he said.

Mr Jenkins said Mr Willi- amson was arguably one of Australia’s greatest playwrights, and was looking forward to the challenge of recreating his story on the stage.

‘‘It’s quite a meaty play so it’s going to be challenging to cast because all seven characters are large, meaty characters,’’ Mr Jenkins said.

‘‘Even the smallest part is not a cameo.’’

Soul Mates is a story of about several different relationships between books, authors and the readers who love them both.
