GV Vets race with Hume Vets
Hume’s highlighted race of the year, the Tungamah Hotel Handicap, was held last Sunday with an invitation for GV Vets to come and join in the 51 km handicap road race.
With race numbers close to 40 riders, everything was set for a great event with six bunches.
Limit took to the road 19 mins ahead of a well groomed scratch group with a little standing water on the roads to St James, Devenish and Goorambat for the outand-back run.
With the cross-winds throughout the morning, it was to be a hard slog.
Second limit made short work of the task of bridging 5 min to the limit group (now down to three riders) to amalgamate shortly after the turn-around.
The scratch boys had their tails up and scorched around the course, catching all in front of them except the front two groups.
The course has long, flat straight runs and has nowhere to hide. To the advantage of the chasers they could see the leaders in the distance, but even with an average speed over 41 km/h they were to miss out taking the win by 36 sec.
With a kilometre to go to the chequered flag the bunch sorting was in hand with each of the 10 remaining lead riders waiting for their opportunity to take the race trophy.
At 500 m out Tina Kreskas got to the lead and said, ‘catch me if you can’. The lone female rider laid down the gauntlet to her opposition and stayed at the front despite Davison’s attempt to try to snatch a victory.
Only a few seconds covered the 10 lead riders, and the judges had to revert to the camera to sort out the minor placings. Davison was only centimetres away in second place with Tielen making up the podium.
Yuille was running on in fourth and a fast-finishing Chilman got over Wilkins for fifth.
The scratch group came home at a rate of knots and got to within 36 sec of the leaders with Laffy taking fastest time at an average speed of 41.07 km/h. Results: 1 Tina Kreskas (14) 1.27.55 (34.79 km/h); 2 Graham Davison (14) s/t; 3 John Tielen (14); 4 Neville Yuille (19); 5 Ian Chilman (14); 6 Chris Wilkins (19); 7 Stephen O’Brien (14); 8 Ron Mason (19); 9 Colin Stokes (14); 10 John Kane (14). Fastest time: Neville Laffy 1.14.31 (41.07 km/h). Next club race, Sunday, June 8 at Benalla; 51 km handicap. Entries close Friday, June 6 at 9 pm with club handicapper Bernie Grealy on 5721 3799.
