It was a successful Wodonga Junior Basketball Tournament for Benalla Breakers’ squad members over the weekend with the Under-16 girls and Under-14 girls runnersup in the competition.
The U/14 girls’ first game was a against a strong Bendigo Braves.
Benalla was defeated 30/16, but their confidence was soon boosted with wins against Seymour 23/15, Mansfield Eagles 26/11 and a draw with Deniliquin 13/13.
The matches gave their percentage points a boost, which allowed the team a finals berth.
In another game against an experienced Bendigo, Benalla was eventually beaten 27/11.
The Under-16 girls had straight victories against Mansfield 36/24, Echuca 32/24 and Myrtleford 19/15, making them real contenders heading into the grand final.
But Mansfield proved too strong second time around and claimed victory against Benalla 38/29.
Once again the Division one Under-16 boys had some great games and wins against Wodonga 43/30 and Wangaratta 41/28.
They lost to Shepparton 26/25 and to Maryborough 34/28, and eventually placed fourth in the competition.
The Under-14 division one boys had some tough games against Bendigo 43/21, Wodonga 48/28, Wangaratta 26/18 and Echuca 44/30, with niggling injuries within the team not helping them.
The recently formed Under-14 division three boys played their first tournament and got off to a great start with their first win against Mildura 32/18, but their remaining games resulted in losses against Mansfield 47/35, Echuca 33/28 and Castlemaine 40/25.
The Under-12 boys were defeated by Yarrawonga 20/10 and Mansfield 28/16, but finished on a high note with victories against Mildura 23/16 and Bendigo 18/8.
The representative teams are looking forward their next tournament when the BBA hosts its own on the weekend from February 28 to March 1.
