Double joy at nationals
For Ellexandra Best, racing is a way of life.
The 15-year-old Benalla resident has been racing gokarts since she was young and last month added a national title to her impressive list of accolades.
On the Australia Day long weekend Ellexandra travelled to Lithgow in NSW and won the Combined District Kart Club All Ladies national trophy event.
Although she has raced at the event for about eight years, this is the first time she has won the championship.
Ellexandra won the heavy junior class with a lap time of 39.704 seconds. However her fastest time for the day came in the prefinal race, when she set a new lap record in 39.585 seconds.
‘‘It’s my best race in heavy and now I’m the ladies’ national champ and I have the lap record,’’ she said.
‘‘I like competing against people my own age, but if I move up to seniors I’ll compete with people from 15 years old and up. ‘‘I like going fast.’’ She also raced in the junior Rotax section at Lithgow and finished fourth.
In four meets this year Ellexandra has recorded one first, one second and a sixth-place finish.
Ellexandra began racing when she was a young child.
‘‘When I was younger my dad used to race cars,’’ she said.
‘‘When I turned seven we went to Melbourne for a drive and we didn’t know where we were, and we ended up at my engine builders and we bought a go-kart.’’
The Best family recently purchased a Hyundai XL with the intention of Ellexandra progressing from go-karts to cars.
Although they are awaiting parts for its completion, Ellexandra said she would hopefully start practising at Winton Motor Raceway soon.
Best effort: Ellexandra Best, 15, won the Combined District Kart Club All Ladies national trophy event last month.
