Lakers cool down Heat
The 17-and-under Lakers’ girls were too strong for the Heat in round eight action of Benalla Basketball Domestic Winter Competition last week.
For much of the game, only a couple of points separated the two teams with some impressive shooting from Lakers’ Isabella Riley proving too much for the Heat, with strong performances from Jazzy Burke and Georgie Ubergang, falling short by eight points in the end.
In the other girls’ game, the Mavericks outlasted a determined Magic outfit in another tight match.
The Mavericks, led by Macey Matthews and Jordan Laird, battled hard all game to notch up their second win of the competition.
The Magic sits second on the ladder and will look to get the points next round as the competition edges closer to the finals.
In the boys’ competition, the Lakers and Suns put on a great display. The Suns jumped out to an early lead in the first half with Jack McLean and the King brothers showing the way, forcing the Lakers to call a timeout to reasses their approach.
This may have proved a master stroke for the talented Lakers as Chelton Orchard and Zach Gebauer turned the deficit into a onepoint lead at the half.
A close second half had the game in the balance before Orchard stepped it up again to give the Lakers the edge by three points at the buzzer.
In the earlier game it was the Celtics’ 17-and-under boys who controlled their game against the Magic, breaking away at the start and controlling the game from there.
Led by the consistent Sam Burrowes and Sam Gebauer and some strong defence from Bailey Hoskins, the Magic had a tough task on its hands to stay in touch with the Celtics but never gave up, with Noah Dyer and Robert Parks putting in a solid effort in a tough game.
This week also saw the conclusion of the current Vicinity Centre Aussie Hoops program with about 15 participants learning and developing basic basketball skills in a fun and relaxed environment and introducing newcomers to the sport of basketball.
Benalla Basketball Association holds Aussie Hoops programs four times throughout the year during each school term.

Benalla
Benalla Golf Club held two events last week — a stableford round on Wednesday, and a par event on Saturday.
The stableford event was attended by 61 players, with the best score on the day going to John Broadbent, the B-grade winner with 41 points, from runner-up Brian Firth on 38 points.
Ian Wise was successful in A-grade on 37 points, placing Rod Squires second with 36 points.
C-grade was taken out by John Robinson on 37 points from Russell Day on 35 points.
Under fine conditions on Saturday, 55 players competed in a par event. The winner of A-grade was David Dunster +3 with Barry Wright second on count-back.
B-grade winner was Alan May on +4 narrowly beating Mark Vorkapic on +3 and the winner of C-grade was Bradley Duddington returning a score of +4 from Brendan Fear on +3.
