Benalla racer Ellexandra Best and team mate Michael Gray won class D in the Australian Production Car Championship in Queensland recently.

The championships, held at Queensland Raceway saw two races of 300 km (96 laps) each, with the first race held under lights.

The initial 300 km fight in the night race saw Best and Gray finish first in class D and outright 11th overall.

Starting the night race in 22nd position, Ellex maintained her position closely behind class competitor Troy Rolley in the Oracle Motor Sport/The 86 Shop Toyota.

The 86 took their driver change stop early, which allowed Ellex to move into class lead. When Ellex handed over the reins of the Lauren Gray Motorsport Toyota Corolla to Michael Gray they were two laps ahead.

‘‘They did an excellent pit stop, the team was super-fast, so we were able to maintain a lap up on the Toyota 86. Mike was able to continue on with the lead, kept out of trouble and brought the team home in first place in class D and 11th outright,’’ she said.

In the second 300 km race, Gray started the race, but 10 laps in, radioed the team to say the Corolla was overheating.

Gray had to drive the Corolla conservatively to minimise the chance of overheating, while the team set him a temperature to monitor and a lap time to maintain.

‘‘The Toyota 86 again took an early pit stop, we were fortunate and took our stop at the right time just as the safety car was released.

‘‘LGM team had another quick pit stop to put us a lap ahead of the Toyota 86,’’ Best said.

Best also had to drive conservatively to avoid overheating and conserve brakes which were also showing signs of wear.

With two laps remaining the 86 caught Best and overtook them. The team finished second in class and 16th outright.

Best and Gray finished the round second in class D and are leading the championship with two rounds to go. The pair’s next round is a four-hour race at Phillip Island from September 8 to 10.
