Bats’ finals dream alive

Benalla Ensign - - Sport -

Goorambat’s top netball side clinched a crucial win on Saturday, making a finals berth ever more likely.

The 41-32 win in Bonnie Doon came through determination and defensive pressure from the Bats.

Both teams played hard, with neither willing to give up the opportunity to play finals.

Defensive pressure made it hard for either side to capitalise on turnovers.

The Bombers came out strong and outscored Goorambat 12 goals to eight in the first quarter.

Kylie Relf and Brittany Button swapped roles for the second quarter and together they put on 10 goals.

The side patiently built its lead and a strong last quarter saw it run out the winner by nine goals.

Goorambat is sitting fifth on the ladder, four points clear of Bright, who it plays this weekend for the final play-off spot.

Awards went to Kate Symes, Elise Nolan and Ally Ellis.

Goals were scored by Button (26) and Relf (15).

In the B-grade match, the Bats notched an 11-point win thanks to sharp shooting from Chelsea Bamford.

Bamford shot 31 goals in the 52-41 win, in a game where the Bats were back to full strength, despite a few niggling injuries.

Awards for the Bats went to Bamford, Gorgia Spinks, and Georgia Hooper. Goals were scored by Bamford, Carly Hogan (12) and Emily Rice (9).

The B-reserve side fell 17 goals short of a result away against the Bombers.

While things did not go the way of the Bats in the first and second stanzas, they fought back in the second half, but in the end lost 32-49.

Awards for the Bats went to Kate Nolan, Nina Gardiner, and Emma Boman. Goals were scored by Courtney McLeod (17) and Nolan (15).

In the C-grade match the Bats could not reel in the Bombers’ lead, losing by 11.

The 40-51 loss came from missed opportunities in the attacking third, while Bonnie Doon made the most of theirs.

The last term was even, with the Bats shooting 12 goals to the Bombers’ 14.

The Bats sit fourth, ahead of this weekend’s opponent Bright.

Awards for the Bats went to Hannah Ely, Ellie Culhane and Emily Houttuin. Goals were scored by Ely (22) and Maddison Woods (18).
