Benalla Hockey Club’s top men’s and women’s sides had frustrating results against the Strikers last week.
The B-women’s side’s Friday night match ended in frustration as both teams played well, but cancelled each other out as the final score remained 0-0.
Sarah Chittick, Mel Gillies and Sharon Watkins worked hard through the middle, with Chittick making many solo runs through Strikers’ defence.
Gillies’ determination kept the ball up Benalla’s end for much of the game, with Watkins pushing forward into the circle.
Umpire best and fairest votes went to Sarah Chittick (3), Mel Gillies (2) and Cindy Daws (1).
The men also faced ladder-leaders Strikers and controlled the first half of the game before going down 2-1.
Many close shots on goal put great pressure on the Strikers’ defense and goalie, and the Tigers’ goalie Perry Plex also worked hard to keep the scoreboard motionless.
Benalla scored first with a flick by Marty Gillies from a penalty corner deflected into the goal by Daniel Trevaskis. Strikers quickly retaliated, then took the win with a second goal just five minutes from the siren.
Umpire best and fairest votes went to David McIntyre (3), Marty Gillies (2) and Rob Dean (1).
Benalla’s under-13 Sixes played their final game of the season, with Cindy Daws scoring a goal against Echuca Green.
The team’s improvement has been immense, with most never having played hockey before.
Umpire best and fairest votes went to Sarah Farley (3), Zoe Grundy (2) and Eloise McDonald (1).
Benalla’s under-15 team also played its last game on Saturday against Echuca.
The Tigers’ excellent teamwork showed again, with some fantastic defence under the Echuca onslaught.
They also welcomed players Darcy and Jonty Tyquin, Siobhan Linnet and Olly and Toby Day from Strikers and Euroa, as those sides don’t have under-15 teams.
Umpire best and fairest votes went to goalkeeper Perry Plex (3), Ankur Singh (2) and Darcy Tyquin (1).
