B-men book grand final berth
Benalla Hockey Club’s B-men’s side booked a spot in Saturday’s grand final after a tight 4-3 win over Strikers.
In their semi-final, Benalla’s men took on top-ofthe-ladder Strikers, after narrowly losing to them last week.
Benalla scored first, with a skilful assist by Dane Hansted, scored by David McIntyre.
Great team work between Rob Dean and Evan Dowe resulted in McIntyre getting another shortly after.
Strikers eventually converted a penalty corner five minutes before half- time, to make the score 2-1 going into the break.
Benalla came out hard in the second half, with forwards Alex Dowe, Shaun Findlow, Travis Guerra and Thomas Hill applying pressure.
They were rewarded shortly after, making the score to 3-1 with a goal from Brandon Trevaskis.
Strikers scored quickly, then held tying the game 3-3 three minutes to go.
Benalla pushed forward, and were awarded a penalty corner with seconds to go.
David McIntyre’s again until with shot slammed into the back board to seal the win, 4-3.
The win sees the side proceed to the grand final on September 9.
Umpire’s votes went to Trevaskis, 3, Martin Gillies, 2, and McIntyre, 1.
Benalla’s B-women side could not follow suit when playing Kyabram-Echuca, losing final.
It was a tough game, with Benalla playing their hardest against the stronger Echuca.
There were many penalty corners played and defended, and Benalla was unlucky to stay scoreless.
Mel Gillies again created the play through the centre 3-0 in their semi- field, with Siobhan Halligan skilfully converting many Echuca runs and Ophelia Tevelein putting pressure down the side line.
Some standout defence included Prue White diving to deflect certain goals, Willow Plex saving one on the line in a penalty corner, Rhonda Carpenter and Zoe Grundy’s early tackles forcing many turnovers.
Umpire best and fairest votes went to Prue White (3), Heidi Perry (2), and Willow Plex (1).
The women now play SYC in the preliminary final on Saturday, for a spot in the grand final against Kyabram-Echuca.
