Great effort

-

The Benalla Basketball Association took seven teams away on the weekend to compete in the annual Wangaratta Junior Invitational tournament.

The Under-12 girls, coached by Maria webb, got off to a good start, recording a 14-all draw with Wodonga first up.

However, things got a bit tougher after that for the youngest campaigners, and they failed to record a win for the weekend, although they did manage to score a weekend high of 19 points in their last game against Echuca.

The under-14 boys, playing in division two, got off to a great start as well, beating Wodonga by 13 points, 32-19.

Their next two games proved a lot harder, with losses to Shepparton, 31-19, and Tatura, 37-27.

The under-14 girls had a tough trip, being placed in division one by mistake and coming up against some seasoned campaigners, most being a lot taller and stronger than them.

Despite not recording a win, their improvement after every game was evident, and their patients and knowledge will help the girls improve further in the coming weeks.

The under-16 boys suffered a narrow loss in their first game against Shepparton, 32-27, which put them on the backfoot from the start.

They beat Wodonga by 19 in the next game, but unfortunately could not overcome Wangaratta and eventual premiers, Echuca in their last two.

The under-18 boys performed very well despite only recording one win.

Their losing margins were less than three points in their other games.

The under-16 and under18 girls were the best performers for the Benalla Breakers during the weekend.

Coach Phil Hide was able to get the under-16 girls through undefeated to the grand final, which they lost to Echuca by 16 points.

The under-18 girls rose to the occasion and beat Shepparton in the final 37-30.
