Benalla’s under-14 boys side has claimed a berth in the Basketball Victoria Junior Championships after a close fought win over Swan Hill.

On Saturday the Benalla Basketball Association under-14 boys and girls representative teams competed in the Basketball Victoria Regional Qualifying Tournament in Shepparton.

During the one day event, teams competed to gain the chance to progress to the Victorian Championships in Ballarat next year.

All teams at the event played a high level of basketball and the day was tough for both the teams.

The Breakers girls made it through to the final of their group against Echuca after a close loss to Wangaratta.

The girls were put under pressure from the start by the Echuca girls and worked hard to stay in touch in a tough loss which ended their championship chances.

The boys won through to the final of their group with wins over Yarrawonga, Kyneton and Whittlesea and faced Swan Hill to see who progressed through to the championships in Ballarat.

The Breakers started well and took an early lead before Swan Hill fought back to close the gap at the half.

During a see-sawing second half, both teams gained the ascendancy before Benalla found the extra effort needed to close out the game and claim its berth in the BVC Junior Championships.
