Benalla Ensign - - Sport -

Aussie cricket legend, Ian Healy will visit Benalla on Friday, February 9, to celebrate local hero Trevor Saker, who has recently been recognised as Australia’s own Specsavers Community Cricket Champion.

In recognition of Trevor’s incredible achievement Ian will take him and Benalla’s junior cricketers through a personal skills session, providing them with tips and tricks on fielding, batting and bowling.

That session will be held at the Benalla Garden’s Oval, Wedge St, on Friday, February 9, at 1 pm.

Trevor was selected as the national winner of the Specsavers Community Cricket Champion competition after being involved in the sport for more than 50 years.

He currently coaches the Benalla under-14 boys team and has coached the North East Region under-14 girls team for the past nine years into the State Championships.

Trevor also continues to play cricket in Benalla and in 2017 travelled to England to represent Australia in an Over 60s Ashes Series.

Avid cricket fan Trevor is incredibly proud and surprised to be recognised as the Community Cricket Champion for Australia.

‘‘I’m absolutely flabbergasted and so stoked to be recognised for my efforts,’’ he said.

‘‘As they all say, you don’t do this stuff for awards, but when they come along it’s pretty special.

‘‘I am lucky to be acknowledged for doing what I love and I want to thank Mark Saunders, who nominated me, as well as the club, Specsavers, and my long suffering cricket widow, my wife Trish. This has all just blown me away.’’

Trevor will also receive a Specsavers and Cricket Australia memorabilia pack to say thanks for his hard work in making cricket great in the local community.
