Walk for a cause

Benalla Ensign - - News -

The annual Walk to D’Feet MND will return to Benalla for the 11th consecutive year on February 25.

The annual fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease has been a massive success since the first walk in 2008.

The event is supported by a number of local businesses and a regular response from shop owners when Sarah DeCrespigny enters their premises laden with posters for the event is ‘‘Is it that time of year again already?’’

It’s a regular activity for DeCrespigny, a member of the Benalla Act2DfeetMND committee.

She is one of many who help arrange the event, which raises funds for research and awareness and has become an integral part of the Benalla calendar.

This year’s event is on Sunday, February 25, and will follow the usual successful format, which includes bike rides, walks, relays and the titles of King, Queen, Prince and Princess of the Lake.

‘‘We started the event in 2008 when Mick Rodger was diagnosed with MND and over the years we have been amazed by the support of the Benalla Community,’’ organiser Robyn Smith said.

‘‘Our philosophy has been to put on an event at no cost, so every dollar raised can be contributed to the cause.

‘‘We couldn’t do this without the support of the community and businesses, many who give their time and services freely.’’

The walk has always surpassed expectations. In its first year the community raised $72 000 towards research projects to find a cure.

Having met their target of raising $500 000 in 10 years, the committee is keen to continue the event as their other target of finding a cure is getting closer.

During the years more Benalla residents have been diagnosed and passed away from MND, an event that was started after one individual’s suffering has sadly become a much wider Benalla cause.

‘‘The Benalla community’s support has been amazing, and we hope that this will continue until we find a cure,’’ Ms Smith said.

If you are interested in taking part, a preregistration shop will be open from Monday, February 19, at Rambling Rose on Bridge St.

Well-supported: Last year’s event saw the money raised since its inception break $500 000.
