Firewood season ends

Benalla Ensign - - News -

The autumn firewood collection season is coming to a close.

Hume assistant chief fire officer Aaron Kennedy said the autumn firewood collection period would close across Victoria on Saturday, June 30.

‘‘If people are planning to collect firewood for winter, then they need to do so before the season ends,’’ Mr Kennedy said.

‘‘Once the season closes it will be illegal for people to collect firewood on public land until spring.’’

Mr Kennedy said if peo- ple were in need of help to find designated firewood collection areas, all sites could be found on the Forest Fire Management Victoria website.

‘‘Firewood collection may already have ceased in some parts of the region where supplies are exhausted, or where rainfall or flooding has affected track conditions making collecting unsafe,’’ he said.

‘‘Firewood collected at these sites is for personal use only and cannot be sold.’’

Mr Kennedy said the spring firewood collection period would open on September 1 this year, depending on conditions.

He said on-the-spot fines ranged from $622 and, for offences that went to court, a person may be liable for fines up to $7773, one-year imprisonment, or both.
