New chap­ter on his­tory

Be­nalla-based au­thor Doug Wil­liams has re­leased a sec­ond edi­tion of his book War Clouds over Be­nalla, com­plete with more than 90 new pages and 11 ad­di­tional chap­ters.

The book will be of­fi­cially launched at Be­nalla Li­brary in Novem­ber.

The sec­ond edi­tion in­cludes new chap­ters which have been merged chrono­log­i­cally into the orig­i­nal text.

It con­tains a va­ri­ety of high- qual­ity pho­tos of vet­er­ans who served at RAAF Sta­tion Be­nalla’s No 11 El­e­men­tary Fly­ing Train­ing School be­tween July, 1941, and Fe­bru­ary, 1945.

The book, which is a must-read for all lo­cal his­tory buffs, fea­tures many in­ter­est­ing char­ac­ters, in­clud­ing:

Squadron leader Charles ‘‘Tubby’’ Shear­down — A civvy pre-war fly­ing in­struc­tor ex­traor­di­naire.

Ray Curl­ing — Avro Lan­caster cap­tain who sur­vived two mid-air col­li­sions.

Vern Lan­caster — Early Spit­fire pi­lot who served the whole war on var­i­ous Mk Spit­fires.

Ge­orge Tom­lin­son — RAAF Sta­tion Be­nalla, stores and equip­ment.

Joseph Gin­nifer — RAAF Sta­tion Be­nalla, air­field guard.

Henry Raf­cliffe - RAAF Be­nalla fitter.

Jim Pope — RAAF fly­ing in­struc­tor. Be­nalla

Trevor Hunter — RAAF Be­nalla fly­ing in­struc­tor.
