New chapter on history
Benalla-based author Doug Williams has released a second edition of his book War Clouds over Benalla, complete with more than 90 new pages and 11 additional chapters.
The book will be officially launched at Benalla Library in November.
The second edition includes new chapters which have been merged chronologically into the original text.
It contains a variety of high- quality photos of veterans who served at RAAF Station Benalla’s No 11 Elementary Flying Training School between July, 1941, and February, 1945.
The book, which is a must-read for all local history buffs, features many interesting characters, including:
Squadron leader Charles ‘‘Tubby’’ Sheardown — A civvy pre-war flying instructor extraordinaire.
Ray Curling — Avro Lancaster captain who survived two mid-air collisions.
Vern Lancaster — Early Spitfire pilot who served the whole war on various Mk Spitfires.
George Tomlinson — RAAF Station Benalla, stores and equipment.
