The Benalla Rotary Club has recently marked 50 years of Meals on Wheels in Benalla.

The first meals were delivered in 1968 at a cost of 40 cents each.

The Benalla Rotary Club initiated the service when it realised there was a gap in older, more isolated people having access to regular meals.

Since the Benalla Rural City Council began coordinating Meals on Wheels in 1990, the Rotary Club has been instrumental in the ongoing success of the program by delivering meals on weekends.

Acting Mayor Peter Davis said the community was indebted to the Rotary Club.

‘‘When the Benalla Rotary Club implemented Meals on Wheels 50 years ago, it ensured that as a community we were committed to looking after those who need our support,’’ Cr Davis said.

‘‘Now, we are grateful to the Rotary Club not just for instigating the service, but for the club’s ongoing support over 50 years.

‘‘Meals on Wheels plays a vital role in maintaining the health and wellbeing of our community.’’

Meals on Wheels is supported by the Australian Government Department of Health and the Victorian Government.
