Patons Cotton Blend 8 ply (50g): 4 balls Wild Rose Shade 39; 3 balls Coral Shade 26; 2 balls each Natural Shade 4 and Pineapple Shade 40; 1 ball each Bright Red Shade 18, Flamingo Shade 25, Royal Blue Shade 23 and Lime Cream Shade 41; 4mm crochet hook; 3 pieces of cardboard, one each 10cm, 15cm and 30cm wide for fringing; 50cm length of 1.5cm diameter dowel; yarn needle

Here’s how

Tension: Square motif measures 10cm from point to point, using 4mm hook. Correct tension is not essential for this wallhangin­g.

Square Motif

(make 20, using colours listed in table below) Using 4mm hook and first colour, make 2ch.

1st row: Miss 1ch, 2dc in next ch.

2nd row: 1ch, 2dc in each dc … 4dc.

3rd row: 1ch, 2dc in first dc, 1dc in each of next 2dc, 2dc in last dc … 6dc.

4th row: 1ch, 2dc in first dc, 1dc in each dc to last dc, 2dc in last dc … 8dc.

5th row: 1ch, 1dc in each dc to end.

6th, 7th and 8th rows: As 4th row … 14dc. Rep last 4 rows once … 20dc. ** Change to second colour.

NOTE When changing colour, use new colour to work final lp of last st in old colour.

13th row: As 5th row. 14th row: 1ch, miss first dc, 1dc in each dc to last 2dc, miss next dc, 1dc in last dc … 18dc.

15th, 16th and 17th rows: As 14th row … 12dc.

18th row: As 5th row.

19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd rows: As 14th row … 4dc.

23rd row: 1ch, miss first dc, 1dc in next dc, miss next dc, 1dc in last dc … 2dc.

24th row: Insert hook in first dc, pull lp through, insert hook in last dc, pull lp through, yoh and draw through all 3 lps on hook. Fasten off.

Triangle Motif

(make 8, using colours listed in table below) Work as for Square Motif to **. Fasten off.

To make up

Do not press. Using a half mattress st seam and following photograph, join motifs.

Edging

With right side facing and using 4mm hook, join Natural with a sl st in Pineapple/coral corner.

1st row: 1ch, (1dc in each of next 20dc) in each of next 4 Triangle motifs, turn … 80dc. 2nd row: 1ch, 1dc in each dc to end.

Rep last row until edging measures 7cm from beg, ending with a right side row, work 2dc in same sp as last dc, rotate to work along left side edge. Work 1dc in each row end of edging, work (1dc in each of next 20dc) in each of next 2 Triangle motifs, work 2dc in same sp as last dc, rotate to work across shape lower edges of motifs, work 1dc in each row end of next 4 Square motifs to bottom point, work 4dc in same sp as last dc, rotate to work 1dc in each row end

of next 4 Square motifs, work 2dc in same sp as last dc, rotate to work along right side edge, work (1dc in each of next 20dc) in each of next 2 Triangle motifs, then work 1dc in each row end of edging to top edge, turn. Next row: 1ch, 1dc in each dc to centre dc of first corner, 5ch, (1tr in next dc, 2ch, miss 2dc) to centre dc of next corner, (1tr, 2ch) 3 times in centre dc of bottom corner, miss 2dc, (1tr in next dc, 2ch, miss 2dc) to centre dc of next corner, 1dc in each dc to end. Fasten off. With right side facing, fold Upper edge over dowel and sew to back with slip stitch. Using 6 strands of Natural, each 200cm long, make a twisted cord and attach to each end of dowel for hanging. Sew in ends.

Fringe

Wind Wild Rose around 30cm-wide piece of cardboard and cut along one edge. Using 7 strands together, work fringe in every ch sp in last row at lower edge. Wind Coral around 15cm wide piece of cardboard and cut along one edge. Using 7 strands together, work fringe in every ch sp in second last row at lower edge. Wind Pineapple around 10cm wide piece of cardboard and cut along one edge. Using 7 strands together, work fringe

in third last row at lower edge. Trim all fringes evenly.
