GROWING TIPS

Better Homes and Gardens (Australia) - - Water Bloomers -

There are about 35 species of waterlily, from miniatures to large types, and there are varieties for all climate zones. Here is what they need for maximum flower yield. These guidelines apply to Nelumbo nucifera,

the sacred lotus, too.

• Position in full sun. They like a minimum of six hours a day, but early morning or late afternoon shade is OK.

• Plant into pots of nutrient-rich media, such as well-rotted cow manure and garden soil. Don’t use potting mix.

• Feed every spring with a slow-release granular fertiliser – never feed in winter.

• Pot again every 1–2 years in spring. Trim waterlily roots but don’t disturb lotus roots.
