• Choose paving and other

hardscape materials in light colours, especially in shaded spaces, to keep things bright and airy.

• Screen out the neighbours, using fencing materials that blend with the rest of the design, then soften the scene with dense foliage plantings.

• Include level changes by introducing raised garden beds. This raises the plant height as well as the viewer’s eye, distracting from the dimensions of the area.

• Use a limited range of

materials – here, stone for beds and pavers, and timber for fencing.

• Disguise gates by making them the same materials as the fence.

• Avoid clutter at ground level by minimising, or eliminating, potted plants.

• Choose furniture that is in scale with your space, and position it symmetrically within the design.
