Finished size About 60½ x 80½ inches (154 x 205cm)

You will need

• 50cm solid emerald green fabric

• 20cm solid light yellow fabric

• 17 – fat quarters assorted solid colours

• 3 – 40cm pieces assorted solid colours

• 2.8 metres solid off white

• 3 metres solid grey for blocks and binding

• Backing fabric

• Batting

Cutting fabric

From solid emerald green, solid light yellow and assorted solid colour yardages, cut 48 sets of:

1 – 2½ x 5 inch rectangle

1 – 17∕8 x 35 inch strip

1 – 17∕8 x 29 inch strip From solid off white, cut:

48 – 17∕8 x 35 inch strips

48 – 2½ x 5 inch strips From solid grey, cut:

8 – 2½ x WOF for binding

48 – 17∕8 x 29 inch strips

Assembling

STEP 1 Gather a set of pieces (17∕8 x 35, 17∕8 x 29 and 2½ x 5 inch strips) from one solid colour.

STEP 2 Sew together the solid colour 17∕8 x 35 inch strip and one solid off white 17∕8 x 35 inch strip along the long edges to make strip set A (Diagram 1). Press seams away from solid off white. Cut strip set A into 2 – 11 inch long A segments 1 – 8 inch long A segment 1 – 3 inch long A segment.

STEP 3 Sew together the solid colour 17∕8 x 29 inch strip and a solid grey 17∕8 x 29 inch strip along the long edges to make strip set B (Diagram 2). Press seam towards darker fabric. Cut strip set B into 2 – 9 inch long B segments and 1 – 6 inch long B segment.

STEP 4 Referring to diagram 3, sew together 3 inch long A segment and 6 inch long B segment. Press seam towards B segment. STEP 5 Referring to Diagram 4, sew the 8 inch long segment to left-hand edge of Step 4 unit. Press seams away from the just added A segment. STEP 6 In same manner, alternatel­y add 9 inch long B segments to top edge of Step 5 unit and 11 inch long A segments to left-hand edge of Step 5 unit (Diagram 5). Always press seams towards B segment and away from A segments. STEP 7 Referring to Diagram 6, sew the solid colour 2½ x 5 inch rectangle to top edge of Step 6 unit, placing it 3¼ inch from left-hand edge. Add a solid off white 2½ x 5 inch rectangle to left-hand edge of Step 6 unit, placing it 3¼ inch from top edge. Press seams towards rectangles. STEP 8 Referring to Diagram 7, trim unit to 10½ inches square including seam allowances to make a block. If you’d like your blocks to be consistent, precise placement of your ruler is important. STEP 9 Repeat steps to make a total of 48 blocks.

Assemble quilt top

STEP 10 Lay out blocks in eight horizontal rows, rotating blocks as desired. Sew together blocks in each row. Press seams in one direction.

STEP 11 Join rows to make quilt top
