Transform a bedroom into a neat space any kid will love
Knock up this neat nook for an instant lifestyle upgrade that any kid – and landlord – will love!
sooner or later, little kids turn into bigger kids and it’s time to update their bedrooms to something more suited to their growing interests. But how do you manage a bedroom makeover on a budget – especially when you’re renting? Easy, think inside the box! If you can’t put up shelves or drill holes in walls, create another set of freestanding, self-supporting walls from plywood sheets. Then, you can decorate to your heart’s content. The look can be tailored to your child’s needs – and when it’s time to move house, you can take this bed nook with you!
1 Store it all
When storage, and space, is at a premium, don’t ignore the potential that ‘under the bed’ has to offer. Look for a set of sturdy old drawers (check out op shops or council clean-ups), then repurpose them with paint, nifty sash cord handles and a set of castor wheels. No more mess! For instructions, see page 142
3 Desk matters
Use an old wooden stool to support the end of a built-in desk along one wall of the freestanding bed nook, which cleverly provides extra storage space as well. You can adjust the height of the stool with screw-in feet, if necessary. And don’t forget to round the end edge of your desktop – in a small space, it will save lots of bumps and bruises on sharp corners! 3 Before
2 Stick to it
In keeping with the slightly rustic, eco look of the plywood walls, use a thick dried tree branch instead of a dowel rod to suspend a comfy cushioned bedhead at the right height. Then, to make ladder storage, use lengths of dowel to form cross-bars between another two sturdy branches – just drill shallow holes in the branches and use PVA to secure the assembly together. Easy! 2
