A NEW chapter for Scania Australia has begun as Swedish national Mikael Jansson takes over the wheel as managing director.

With more than 30 years’ experience with the company, Mr Jannson had previously tackled the role of senior vice president and member of the Top Management Team, as well as holding the position of Global Head of Scania’s Parts and Service Division.

His interest in Scania’s after-sales and process first took hold while completing his tertiary education in Sweden.

As part of his final thesis he devised a new way of reducing inventory as part of his full study into Scania’s parts stock holding levels.

Impressed, Scania offered him the opportunity to implement his project, which he did very successfully, working with the IT and Parts departments.

The theme of process and after-sales support is one Mikael is likely to pursue into the new role.

A stark contrast to his predecessor Roger McCarthy’s sales background.

“I believe the market will develop and sell more and more services, we gained a lot of market share in the after-sales side,” he said.

This includes expanding the flexible plans of Scania maintenance and responding to the growth in interest in the after-sale and workshop market.

“We don’t sell hardware, we sell solutions,” he explained.

However the corporate knowledge of Australia’s market won’t be too far away as Mr McCarthy plans to remain on the Scania board.

“I am pleased to say I am handing over the baby in a reasonably good condition, it just needs to now continue to grow,” Mr McCarthy said at the announcement.

As part of the reorganisation, McCarthy’s previous secondary role as sales director for truck, bus and engines, which he held during his eight-year term as managing director will split from the position.

The sales director position has been taken by Eaton Corporation’s general manager Martin Toomey.

“To strengthen the management structure with Mikael coming from an after-sales background in Scania, we have taken the decision to introduce a new head of truck, bus and engine from a sales perspective,” Mr McCarthy said.

Mr Jansson says he looks forward to taking on such a challenging market.
