Lusty for a job in the truck biz
Graduate engineer scores new job fresh off the floor of the Brisbane truck show
FROM A MAJOR in aerospace engineering to the workshop floor of a major trailer manufacturer, new Graham Lusty Trailers recruit Edward Greenway loves the change of scenery.
A visit to the Brisbane Truck Show was all it took for the recent graduate to score a job with GLT.
Involved in the heavy vehicle industry from a young age thanks to the influence of his father, Edward said he had always had an interest in the industry.
“Dad was driving semis and B-Doubles around the country and I would go along with him and have a great time on holidays, and wish that I was there with him when I was back at school.
Despite his taste for diesel Edward didn’t quite dip his toe into the industry (until after he completed his engineering degree) on a visit to the Brisbane truck show.
“We used to go when it was on every second year, and I enjoyed jumping in as many things as possible and talking to as many people as I could,” he said.
“It just so happens that after visited the GLT stand at the truck show this year, and mentioned that I recently graduated.
“James the managing director’s ears pricked and it all fell into place.
“It was fantastic, they’re a great team and they were willing to give me a go,” Edward said.
“I have found we are starting to pursue some novel and innovative ideas and are able to simulate them in our drafting software and continue to make sure our trailers are pushing the forefront and boundaries of what customers can expect to achieve,” he said.
Now tackling some interesting and unique problems, Edward says not many of his peers were aware of the opportunities for engineers in the industry.
“Sometimes you are not aware of how different industries value different people with different skills.
“If the industry was able to communicate the way these people are valued there would be much more interest and flows of talent into the sector.”
