Sealed until death do us part

New driveline technology

Big Rigs - - TECH TALK - Bob Riley

TIMES are a-changing as the Nobel Prize-winning bard once sang. Extended service times for cars and trucks, more efficient lubricating product and lube-administering technology, it only had to be a matter of time.

Now ‘sealed-for-life’ drivelines are available in Australia from Meritor.

The Permalube RPL Series drivelines were the first in the North American heavy-duty commercial vehicle industry to be permanently lubricated and sealed for life.

The RPL series offers reduced operating and maintenance costs, industryleading warranties, easy serviceability and extended U-joint life, particularly on gear-fast/run-slow drivetrains and higher torque applications.

The RPL drivelines have high torque-rated models available for demanding applications, including heavy service and downspeeding.

They also feature: extended universal joint life; a four-bolt design for easy installation and service; and their E-coated steel guard secures and protects the slip seal against contaminants and damage.

Triple-lip seals provide the ultimate protection against contaminants, nylon thrust washers eliminate metal-to-metal contact, preventing wear and a self-aligning centre bearing is standard.

The RPL35 Series drivelines are designed for demanding applications, such as heavy service and downspeeding where these applications typically place higher torque demands on the drivetrain system.

The RPL35 Series drivelines accommodate the increased engine torques and distribute it more evenly throughout the system.

Meritor says the RPL drivelines are environmentally ‘green’ because the need to grease the driveline is eliminated.

Meritor’s P600 Series heavy-haul planetary axles debuted in Australia at the Brisbane Truck Show.

These planetary drive axles are engineered and manufactured to deliver higher capacity and improved performance across a multitude of heavy-duty off-highway applications.

Meritor planetary axles are known for exceptional quality, strength and toughness, and each axle is backed by an intensive validation process at Meritor’s global design and testing centres.

“The P600 is attracting strong levels of interest with many Australian customers in mining and heavy haul applications attracted by the robust build quality and the higher load rating,” Meritor sales and marketing manager Michael Snell said.

The P600 planetary axle series offer maximum gross axle weight rating (GAWR) up to 38,000kg for the series’ tandem axles and 57,000kg for series’ tridem axles and maximum gross combination mass rating (GCM) up to 200,000kg for the series’ tandem axle and 250,000kg for series’ tridem axles.

Other important features of the P600 series include: a driver-controlled differential lock which will maximise traction; anti-lock braking system capability; a non-vented braking drum to protect the braking system; and a fabricated steel housing fitted with brackets that will accept all heavy duty suspensions available on the market.

Drivelines are environmentally ‘green’ because the need to grease the driveline is eliminated.
