This fishy little rig is well set up
Isuzu top choice for Sea Lorry
MAL HUNKIN is the proud owner-operator of Toowoomba-based The Sea Lorry.
About two years old and with a bit more than 150,000km on the clock, Mal said the lorry was a good little truck.
“It’s our second new Isuzu, the first, a dual cab in the previous cab shape, put in more than 800,000 kilometres before it was replaced,” Mal said.
Mal and his wife Neptina also operate Seafood on Mary, a popular seafood shop not far from the city centre in East Toowoomba.
The Sea Lorry is set up on an Isuzu NPR 200 Premium Tradepack Medium which is fitted with a Sitec Series III 155 diesel, an AMT gearbox and all-round disc brakes.
On the tray sits a custom-made combination fridge-freezer box that is also fitted with a live seafood tank and is set-up entirely for retail sales.
“Most of the work the truck does is in retail and farm household deliveries,” Mal said.
“I run from Toowoomba out as far west as Roma, south-west to St George and south to Goondiwindi, Inglewood, Texas, Stanthorpe and anywhere in between.
“We serve up to 1600 people door-to-door each fortnight with fresh, frozen and live seafood so I’m probably running anywhere from 600 to 1500km a week.”
On the tray just behind the cab sit the fridge motors and the compressors which are separated and insulated from the actual fridgefreezer box. They run off a dual battery system that powers everything, including the cash register and the EFTPOS machine as well as an internet-based communications system that lets Mal monitor the shop’s cold room, fridges and freezers when he’s on the road, and also keep in touch with his family.
Behind the fridge motors sits the freezer compartment which is accessible from both sides of the truck. The left-hand side of the cold box lifts up to form an awning over a stainless steel counter/ servery area, providing direct access to the freezer and the display fridge.
