Roma’s new truck stop close
A NEW rest stop for livestock transporters is closer to reality with work on the Roma Saleyards Precinct Development well under way.
Work on the project has commenced, with the council beginning work on the hard stand area earlier this month.
Further activity in the precinct is expected in the coming months as United Petroleum commences work on their multi-million dollar petrol station and truck stop, to be built at the corner of the Warrego Hwy and the Roma Saleyards entry road.
The development, funded by United Petroleum, will include a roadhouse, restaurant, separate truckers’ lounge and amenities.
Fuelling facilities will include a four-island ultra high flow diesel truck canopy with AdBlue, and a four-island petrol and LPG canopy with off-street parking for cars and trucks will also be included.
Councillor Peter Flynn, portfolio chair for the Roma Saleyards, said the development was one that had been needed for a long time.
“There had been a number of previous attempts to set up a truck stop in Roma for the past 20 years,” he said.
“People have even purchased blocks of land with that plan in mind, but unfortunately nothing has ever come to fruition.
“So we thought if we don’t set it up, no one else will.”
The idea had then been earmarked by the previous council, that was able to secure State Government land for the project, allowing the construction to begin this year.
“This facility is not only for truck drivers stopping into the Roma Saleyards, it will also be convenient for other heavy vehicle drivers and visitors passing through on their long-haul journeys to refuel and rest,” Cr Flynn said.
The council has received only positive feedback from road carriers, but questions from the community about why it is getting involved in the stop.
“Like I said, if we didn’t do it, no one would,” Cr Flynn said.
The saleyard build includes a 2.3ha hard stand for road trains and 0.5ha hard stand for B-doubles and an upgrade of the saleyards entrance to cater for Type 2 road trains.
The hard stand construction work is scheduled for completion by November 2017 and the truck stop is scheduled for completion by February 2018.
BEGINNING: Preliminary works have started on the new truck stop at the Roma Saleyards.
The saleyard upgrades are expected to benefit both drivers and livestock owners.
