“IT’S one of our most popular units,” Westco’s truck sales manager Andrew Vaughan said.

The 6x4 Fuso with a stock crate body in Westco’s front yard was heading out to the near 581,500 hectare Keeroongooloo Station, one of Georgina Pastoral Company’s properties.

It is just to the south-east of Windorah in far western Queensland’s channel country. The truck and crate are well set up.

The truck is Fuso’s Heavy FV54 6x4 that comes from the factory with an extra-long wheelbase. It’s powered by Fuso’s Euro 5 rated 12-litre, turbo-charged and air-to-air intercooled six-cylinder diesel which develops 295kW (400hp) at 1900rpm and produces 2000Nm of torque at 1100rpm.

It is fitted with Fuso’s 12-speed automated manual gearbox which can be operated in either manual or auto modes. The Heavy FV54 has a GVM of 24 tonnes and has a GCM rating of 50 tonnes.

The livestock crate, by Leader Bodies & Crates, is engineer designed using the latest 3D software modelling, while all the parts are cut and made using CNC plasma cutting and robotic welding technology.

All the components are sandblasted before they are primed and spray-paint finished while the tray floors are spray painted with an anti-slip finish.

The hold-down clamps that hold the crate to the truck tray are actually shaped using high-pressure water-jet cutting technology which allows for their distinct shape and allows the steel they are cut from to retain its structural integrity and tensile strength far longer than an equivalent heat-formed clamp.

The crate’s chassis is built from full-length channel with the cross members welded within the channel to give the structure maximum strength, and this unit will need all this for a life in the Channel Country.
