Getting the safe edge
Scaffolding, guard rail and platform safety in FNQ
PROVIDING a safe workplace is an imperative for Australian employers.
Digby Crowther, the founder and director of NQ Edge Protection, a scaffolding, guard rail and work platform company, has been providing safety solutions for those working at heights since 1998.
NQ Edge Protection delivers safety equipment for thousands of Australian construction workers from its branches in Cairns, Townsville, Toowoomba and Brisbane and in doing so services a geographical area ranging from the Gold Coast to the Torres Strait.
“We offer the best prices, best service and best gear and that sums up what you’ve got to do to be successful in our industry,” Mr Crowther said.
“Our standout attribute is our service, which is why we only choose Isuzus.
“They’ve never broken down and are supported by Isuzu Service Agreements for our fleet of 11, soon to be 12, Isuzu NQR long wheelbase models.
“The service agreements have simplified our vehicle management. It means we have a fixed price each month that we can forecast in our budgets, which assists our cash flow management, and their flexibility means we can service them at any Isuzu dealership.”
The Isuzu NQR 87-190 has a GVM of 8.7 tonnes and its Euro V rated four cylinder 16 valve single overhead cam diesel engine provides 140kW of power at 2600rpm and produces an impressive 513Nm of torque in a rev band that extends from 1600 to 2600rpm.
“The torque on these trucks is excellent for their size,” Digby said.
“Climbing hills with a full load requires minimal down shifting and that’s a huge advantage.
“We’ve also noticed fuel consumption consistency irrespective of the load being carried. Lightly or fully loaded, consumption is much the same.
“They all have highly customised, purpose-built aluminium tray bodies to carry our edge protection systems and scaffolding

equipment, which makes our day to day business more efficient.
“They’re easy to drive; changing gears in the full synchronised gearbox is much like a regular car, and the turning circle is surprisingly tight.
NQ Edge Protection has a requirement to meet tight deadlines over most of Queensland, Digby said.
“If we don’t get to a job on time we’re going to have an unhappy customer.”
