9th annual truck show

Big Rigs - - NEWS -

I’m on the committee, but this is just the best show going.”

Benny and Steve drive for Adelaide Towing and The Truck Factory (Towing) respectively.

Both businesses are owned by Mark Menzie, so the rivalry is convivial.

Benny is the ‘new’ boy on the block, having been with the company for six years – the last four straight.

His Coronado, like Steve’s Peterbilt, is above and beyond in presentation.

“You see some sad things in the course of the job. No accident is nice to go to. How do you cope? The only way can explain it is it’s like a switch. You have to turn off.”

After 56 years in towing, Steve concurs.

“You learn to shut off,” he said.

“If you don’t you would be in all sorts of trouble. It catches up with a lot of the blokes in the business years after they’ve given it away. When I first started I used to take the cars home to people’s places. Often you would get there before the police arrived, the parent or partner would ask where their son was and you would have to tell them. It’s a lot better these days.”

“It’s also a very rewarding job,” Benny said.

“Mark Menzie, who started the business 14 years ago, is a great boss and a great friend. He’s terrific to work for.”

For the second year running, the Rig of the Show was taken out by the Cornwill brothers with their T908.

Attention to the minutest detail has given this truck a warehouse of trophies over the years.

When we met them at Koroit, the front of the truck was jacked off the ground so Rick could tyre-black not only the sidewalls but the treads as well.

It was not as though the truck was lacking competition – quite the opposite.

Rick has indicated that he will not enter next year as he has been invited to be a judge.

And won’t that be a relief to the opposition! Koroit. Ten years in 2019. Y’all Be There!

TOWIE LIFE FOR ME: Benny loves his gig with Adelaide Truck Towing.
