The Chain of Responsibility laws are coming, ready or not
AMENDMENTS to the Heavy Vehicle National Law will bring a new era of Chain of Responsibility to the road transport industry, with drastically increased fines for breaches across the transport chain, including for drivers, and a shift in responsibility for all in the chain.
Big Rigs contributor Bruce Honeywill wrote about the amendments in our last edition, which sparked opinions of many readers about the issue.
■ Ricky Brydon: Great. So more paperwork to fill out. I can totally see how this and increases in fines is going to save lives and stop car drivers from driving like wankers... I can’t believe these peanuts continue to get voted in!!!
■ Ben Gunn: And they wonder why the younger generation don’t want to drive trucks. This is why cause it’s only industry where the man or woman doing the hard yards behind the wheel cops the pine apple rough end first. You guys dead set have spent to much time with Toll and Linfox and haven’t asked the little guy that going to cop the lot and send there business to the wall. Just another revenue stream that’s all it is.
■ Joel Taynton: Doubt it will make any difference to our jobs any way. A lot of places to get loaded we have to sign the dotted line and tick all the right boxes regardless of whether its true or not or we don’t get loaded and have to cop a mouthful from the idiots in the office.
■ Chris Hughes: It is great in theory but what police officer has the time to follow the CoR up the line. not the local cop but may be task force but the CoR may be intestate how does he/she then follow that up. what’s the easiest thing to do but fine/report the driver and leave it at that, no other follow up/investigation.
■ Doug Campbell: Yeah great. More paperwork. Bigger fines. Same job. The sooner these politicians, regulators and everyone in between stop telling us how to do our job, then and only then will it get better. On a km basis we are the safest people on the road.
Having a cattle farmer made liable is a joke. Having a forkie liable is a joke. I keep me safe. That’s my responsibility. The soon every driver does the same, the better we’ll all be.
NEW AMENDMENTS: The new amendments will be here in the second half of 2018.
All truck drivers will be affected by changes to CoR.
