The Chain of Re­spon­si­bil­ity laws are com­ing, ready or not


AMEND­MENTS to the Heavy Ve­hi­cle Na­tional Law will bring a new era of Chain of Re­spon­si­bil­ity to the road trans­port in­dus­try, with dras­ti­cally in­creased fines for breaches across the trans­port chain, in­clud­ing for drivers, and a shift in re­spon­si­bil­ity for all in the chain.

Big Rigs con­trib­u­tor Bruce Honey­will wrote about the amend­ments in our last edi­tion, which sparked opin­ions of many read­ers about the is­sue.

■ Ricky Bry­don: Great. So more pa­per­work to fill out. I can to­tally see how this and in­creases in fines is go­ing to save lives and stop car drivers from driv­ing like wankers... I can’t be­lieve these peanuts con­tinue to get voted in!!!

■ Ben Gunn: And they won­der why the younger gen­er­a­tion don’t want to drive trucks. This is why cause it’s only in­dus­try where the man or woman do­ing the hard yards be­hind the wheel cops the pine ap­ple rough end first. You guys dead set have spent to much time with Toll and Lin­fox and haven’t asked the lit­tle guy that go­ing to cop the lot and send there busi­ness to the wall. Just an­other rev­enue stream that’s all it is.

■ Joel Tayn­ton: Doubt it will make any difference to our jobs any way. A lot of places to get loaded we have to sign the dot­ted line and tick all the right boxes re­gard­less of whether its true or not or we don’t get loaded and have to cop a mouth­ful from the id­iots in the of­fice.

■ Chris Hughes: It is great in the­ory but what po­lice of­fi­cer has the time to fol­low the CoR up the line. not the lo­cal cop but may be task force but the CoR may be in­tes­tate how does he/she then fol­low that up. what’s the eas­i­est thing to do but fine/re­port the driver and leave it at that, no other fol­low up/in­ves­ti­ga­tion.

■ Doug Camp­bell: Yeah great. More pa­per­work. Big­ger fines. Same job. The sooner these politi­cians, reg­u­la­tors and ev­ery­one in be­tween stop telling us how to do our job,then and only then will it get bet­ter. On a km ba­sis we are the safest peo­ple on the road.

Hav­ing a cat­tle farmer made li­able is a joke. Hav­ing a forkie li­able is a joke. I keep me safe. That’s my re­spon­si­bil­ity. The soon every driver does the same, the bet­ter we’ll all be.


NEW AMEND­MENTS: The new amend­ments will be here in the sec­ond half of 2018.

All truck drivers will be af­fected by changes to CoR.
