Help take dan­ger­ous driv­ers off the road

IN THE wake of an­other truckie’s dan­ger­ous be­haviour on our roads, New South Wales Po­lice Chief In­spec­tor Phil Brooks has ham­mered home the ben­e­fits of dash­cams.

“I en­cour­age any­one that cap­tures dash­cam footage to take that footage to po­lice and pro­vide a state­ment so we can pros­e­cute the of­fend­ing driver,” he said.

Insp Brooks’ com­ments came af­ter po­lice charged a truck driver with speed­ing, driv­ing while priv­i­leges re­moved and driv­ing a heavy ve­hi­cle while fa­tigued.

The 35-year-old Queens­land driver, who will at­tend court in com­ing weeks, was in­ter­cepted by po­lice on the Hume High­way by the Camden High­way Pa­trol on Pic­ton Rd, Wilton, af­ter an­other road user alerted po­lice to his dan­ger­ous be­haviour.

The driver was un­able to pro­duce a log book, but did have sup­ple­men­tary records of his trip ac­tiv­ity.

The heavy ve­hi­cle was es­corted by po­lice to an RMS in­spec­tion sta­tion at Uan­derra, where in­spec­tors dis­cov­ered a speed sen­sor cable was re­moved from the lower por­tion of the gear­box and pulse well.

The de­fect was rec­ti­fied at the in­spec­tion sta­tion so a de­fect no­tice was not is­sued.

The driver pro­duced a Queens­land class MC li­cence, how­ever a check of RMS records con­firmed his driv­ing priv­i­leges were re­moved in New South Wales on May 25, 2017.

The driver de­nied knowl­edge, how­ever RMs records con­firmed he had been pre­vi­ously ad­vised.

The driver was no­ti­fied of his li­cence sta­tus and was un­able to con­tinue driv­ing.

The Na­tional Heavy Ve­hi­cle Reg­u­lar launched a new re­port­ing line that al­lows truck driv­ers and op­er­a­tors to con­fi­den­tially re­port safety breaches.

The hot­line will re­ceive and as­sess truck safety con­cerns to de­ter­mine what ac­tion is re­quired.

Aus­tralian Truck­ing As­so­ci­a­tion chair Ge­off Crouch said the re­port­ing line was welcome news for the in­dus­try.

“Many em­ploy­ees and op­er­a­tors, if pressed to act il­le­gally, are wor­ried about los­ing their con­tract so they are afraid to re­port breaches,” he said.

In­for­ma­tion and breaches that can be re­ported in­clude an in­ci­dent or sit­u­a­tion that af­fects the safety of a heavy ve­hi­cle or its op­er­a­tion; a pro­ce­dure, prac­tice or con­di­tion that en­dan­gers the safety of a heavy ve­hi­cle driver, their pas­sen­gers, other road users or the com­mu­nity and a pro­ce­dure, prac­tice or con­di­tion that leads to non-com­pli­ance with the HVNL.

The Heavy Ve­hi­cle Confidential Re­port­ing line is now open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and op­er­ated by Crime Stop­pers Queens­land.

Calls to the re­port­ing line are free from any land­line in Aus­tralia and some mo­bile providers.
