Need help lodging your tax return?
NEED some help lodging your tax return this year?
Don’t worry, the Australian Tax Office has created a series of Tax Time Toolkits, with one specifically for truck drivers.
Each toolkit has been designed to help Australians in areas where the ATO knows taxpayers are at risk of making a mistake when they’re preparing and lodging their tax return.
The transport toolkit contains information regarding travel, car, clothing, phone and internet and other deductible work expenses like protective equipment such as sunglasses, sun hats and sunscreens, restraining ropes and union fees.
It also includes information on what incomes need to be declared, what can and cannot be claimed as a gift or donation and keeping the right records to substantiate claims and not miss out on a deduction.
To claim a deduction, you must have spent the money yourself and weren’t reimbursed it, it must be directly related to earning your income and you must have a record to prove it.
You can only claim the work-related part of expenses.
You can’t claim a deduction for any part of the expense that relates to personal use.
The toolkit directory also contains links to information which will help answer some key tax time questions – like how to track your refund, how to use ATO Online services and how to access resources such as the my Deductions tool in the ATO app.
