Jayne flying a flag for truckies
Country songstress proud to write Aussie driving tunes
IF AUSSIE country singer and songwriter Jayne Denham had a dollar for every time a truckie told her the song Addicted to the Diesel helped keep them awake at night as they drove down the dark, lonely highways, she’d be a very rich woman.
When she wrote the song, she’d hoped it would help a driver on a long night shift, and it seems to have worked.
“It’s sort of funny, I don’t personally drive trucks, though a lot think I do. My family had a business so I did spend a lot of time out in trucks delivering when I was younger but that’s the only affiliation I had with trucks,” Jayne said.
Jayne has been writing and recording albums for the last 12 years after releasing a song called Cousin Jude about a girl in Tamworth who drove trucks, which was released as a single with a video clip.
“The rest is history – every album (I’ve written) has had a trucking song on it ever since,” she said.
Jayne said since that first song, she’d learnt so much about the trucking industry and loved being someone who could “fly the flag” for drivers.
“It’s been really fun meeting so many people. I get inspiration talking to drivers, they give me ideas,” she said.
“I always get the lyrics checked. It’s really important it has to lyrically flow, but (I need to make sure) the content is correct.
❝mates I send my
the lyrics and get them to check it. It makes it fun for them too, they say ‘Jayne you need to do it this way’.

“It’s been really fun over the years. I send my mates the lyrics and get them to check it. It makes it fun for them too, they say ‘Jayne you need to do it this way’.
“It’s fun for them and it makes it a team effort.”
But it’s not just the Aussie truckies who love Jayne – so do our mates over in the US.
“I was invited to perform, I went back over there in June again this year to go to the Shell Super Rigs Show in Virginia,” Jayne said.
“It started two years ago when I got invited to the Dallas Truck Show. They heard about what I do in Australia and invited me to perform. Everyone was like ‘there’s this chick singing truck songs!’
“I’ve been back and forth over the years, it’s been a lot of fun.
“I think they like the Aussie flavour and they ask me about the Australian truck drivers and what’s different.
“It’s a bit of fun, I just say that they drive on the wrong side of the road.”
Jayne will be at the Academy of Country Music Tamworth until July 14 or you can buy her latest album, Calamity, to have a listen to her new tunes for yourself.
