Big Rigs - - TASSIE TRUCKIN’ -

LAUNCESTON’S Peter Nixon rolled in to Mood Food, the 24-hour Caltex truck stop and roadhouse at Kempton, for a refreshment break the other day.

He was driving an eye-catching Polytec 2016 UD PK1728 rigid at the time.

“I’m on my way back to Launceston just now, on my return leg from Hobart, empty, having brought down a load of parquetry boards for cabinet-makers,” he said.

“I have been here for two months now, and if I am honest, this is an awesome job. And this is the perfect rig for the work – so good to drive and comfortable, and it’s even automatic.

“Plus, they are a good crowd to work with and they look after their drivers and run top gear.”

He told us he has been on the road for about 25 years.

“I spent the first 18 years driving dump trucks up on Groote Island, then I came down here to Tasmania seven years ago and I love it here, especially as we work statewide,” he said.

“And this state is perfect for my time off as I enjoy fishing, camping and four-wheel driving. “What better a location?” He said he’d never had any regrets about driving as a career, other than that he should have started straight away after leaving school.
