Must-at­tend ses­sion of TMC


MAS­TER Code mae­stro Peter El­liot has two words of ad­vice for any­one con­cerned about how the new safety duty around main­te­nance ap­plies to them: don’t panic.

For those lucky enough to be in Mel­bourne for TMC 2018, Peter and Mas­ter Code tech­ni­cal writer Sean Minto are helm­ing a se­ries of work­shops on main­te­nance risk man­age­ment and com­pli­ance.

Or­gan­is­ers says these are an “ab­so­lute must” for any­one in the supply chain. Un­der the new CoR rules that came into play on Oc­to­ber 1, the max­i­mum penalty for a cor­po­ra­tion if reck­less­ness is in­volved is now $3 mil­lion. The max­i­mum penalty for an in­di­vid­ual will be $300,000, or five years im­pris­on­ment, or both.

Peter and Sean are con­fi­dent they will be able to arm at­ten­dees with all the tools they need to go back to their work­place and feel pos­i­tive about com­pli­ance.

For those who aren’t in Mel­bourne, Peter strongly rec­om­mends getting your hands on a copy of the new Mas­ter Code, which by the time you read this should be avail­able for free down­load from the NHVR web­site.

“Most com­pa­nies who have work, health and safety in place just have to ex­tend cur­rent prac­tice of risk main­te­nance to ac­tual main­te­nance of the trucks; that’s prob­a­bly the new thing for them,” Peter said.

“The small op­er­a­tors are all go­ing to strug­gle with this, but so is half the world so they’re not go­ing to be by them­selves.

“It’s just start­ing a process. Peo­ple are aware it’s there; now it’s just a mat­ter of start­ing to do some­thing.”

Peter said one of the best places to do that is by read­ing chap­ter three of the in­dus­try code.

“That’s a sim­ple way to get from zero to un­der­stand­ing what you have to do, and to help ex­plain to you how to do it,” he said.

“We in­tended the Mas­ter Code to teach peo­ple how to do a risk man­age­ment process if they haven’t got one in place and then they just have to ap­ply it to main­te­nance.”

Peter also sug­gests getting fa­mil­iar with chap­ter eight on ve­hi­cle stan­dards.
