Must-attend session of TMC
MASTER Code maestro Peter Elliot has two words of advice for anyone concerned about how the new safety duty around maintenance applies to them: don’t panic.
For those lucky enough to be in Melbourne for TMC 2018, Peter and Master Code technical writer Sean Minto are helming a series of workshops on maintenance risk management and compliance.
Organisers says these are an “absolute must” for anyone in the supply chain. Under the new CoR rules that came into play on October 1, the maximum penalty for a corporation if recklessness is involved is now $3 million. The maximum penalty for an individual will be $300,000, or five years imprisonment, or both.
Peter and Sean are confident they will be able to arm attendees with all the tools they need to go back to their workplace and feel positive about compliance.
For those who aren’t in Melbourne, Peter strongly recommends getting your hands on a copy of the new Master Code, which by the time you read this should be available for free download from the NHVR website.
“Most companies who have work, health and safety in place just have to extend current practice of risk maintenance to actual maintenance of the trucks; that’s probably the new thing for them,” Peter said.
“The small operators are all going to struggle with this, but so is half the world so they’re not going to be by themselves.
“It’s just starting a process. People are aware it’s there; now it’s just a matter of starting to do something.”
Peter said one of the best places to do that is by reading chapter three of the industry code.
“That’s a simple way to get from zero to understanding what you have to do, and to help explain to you how to do it,” he said.
“We intended the Master Code to teach people how to do a risk management process if they haven’t got one in place and then they just have to apply it to maintenance.”
Peter also suggests getting familiar with chapter eight on vehicle standards.
