What I Wear to Work: Who wears sandals with a suit? RuPaul, of course
RUPAUL 55, host, Gay for Play and RuPaul’s Drag Race, Los Angeles
Tell me about your new show, Gay for Play, on Logo TV.
It’s a game show in the tradition of ’70s hits like Match Game and Hollywood Squares, where contestants rely on celebrities to help them answer pop trivia questions. It has this fun, irreverent, cheeky vibe that’s also a bit of a throwback.
How do you dress for it?
Well, I love colors. I love to tickle myself. The way I’m able to maintain my sanity is to infuse my life with color and laughter and joy.
Would you say your style is different for work vs. everyday life?
I don’t have those kinds of boundaries. I can get away with wearing anything I want.
Do you have a strategy for planning outfits?
I rarely wear jeans and a T-shirt to go outside. It’s easier for me to throw on a suit with the jacket, the pants, and the shirt because inevitably—in Hollywood or at the airport or anywhere, really—somebody is going to ask for a picture.
It’s a business, and when you live a brand, you have to protect it. I want to appear as RuPaul, the star.
Is your jacket fuchsia?
It’s fuchsia with purple, and it’s got cranberry in there with orange.
And your shirt underneath?
This is a basic black shirt with a little bit of stretch in it. That’s so important to me— that I feel like I can move in what I’m wearing.
Your pants show off your sandals perfectly.
I love putting sandals with a suit. I love having a silhouette that’s classic, but playing with patterns and fabric and then throwing on some sandals. I live in California, so it works!
