THIS WILD LIFE
Acoustic-alternative was a brief trend towards the start of the 21st century in which tattooed punk rock dudes got to show off their sensitive sides – think the first City and Colour record, Secondhand Serenade and the granddaddy of them all, Dashboard Confessional. While it wasn’t quite screaming out for a renaissance, Long Island duo This Wild Life have given it a red-hot go on their debut album – and the end result isn’t nearly as bad as one might anticipate it to be. Rather, it’s quite pleasant: They certainly know their way around their instruments (both voice and guitar), and the stabs of drums, strings and even glockenspiel make for a nice touch. Although the tracks tend to blend together after a while, there’s enough going on here to warrant a full listen. Maybe even a couple more. Charming.
