A new juvenile bail facility touted for the Kimberley has been met by the Department of Justice with surprise.
Shire of Derby/West Kimberley chief executive Jonathan Throssell said the council had moved to provide in-principle support for the proposed facility being driven by Derby Police.
The proposed site, at Jarlmadangah Burru Aboriginal community, would reduce fiscal and time burdens on Derby police who had to escort juveniles to the Banana Well facility, the closest which was about 300km away, Mr Throssell said. If that facility was full police would have to escort juveniles to Perth’s Rangeview remand centre.
