Smith claims debut silver
Broome athlete Lance Smith has returned home with a new collection of silverware after competing in the Bali International Stickfighting Challenge in Indonesia.
The event was his first international tournament as he blitzed the field, winning silver medals in single and double weapon categories, and the single and double Kulata or padded stick, minimal armor contests last month.
Smith said he loved sparring and trained by running on the dunes, hitting a bag with sticks, lifting and doing the steps in Minyirr Park.
In Bali, the Cacoy Doce Pares Cable Beach club member joined teams from Australia, the US, UK, and Singapore, and Indonesian Army paratroopers for the September 10 competition.
“The venue was amazing,” he said.
“I am proud to say that I have come home with four silver medals.”
CDPCB guru and world champion fighter Bianca Hellberg said Smith made a memorable impression on the tournament with his humble character and positivity.
“His form got sharper, he developed great speed and finesse in his striking techniques,” she said.
Smith has turned his focus to the world championships next August.
