Broome Advertiser - - News - Robert Dougherty

High-flyers and unsung heroes of the Kimberley were recognised at a recent gala awards night in Perth.

The winners attended the Western Australian Regional Achievement and Community Awards, which celebrate the contributions of individuals, communities and businesses.

Derby-based Wattnow Electrical scooped the Prime Super Business Achievement Award for expanding its workforce from two to 12, and increasing revenue by more than 450 per cent.

All this was achieved while the company supported local sporting teams and provided free electrical work for a women’s shelter in the town. Wattnow Electrical founder and director Jonathan Smith said it was a great night for regional businesses.

“It was a great night for us, a big honour for business achievement in remote locations — goes to show we are kicking goals where it counts,” he said.

“We pride ourselves on making sure everything is done to a high standard and employees are very well trained in regulations.”

During the night, Broome’s Kyle Andrews Foundation scooped the RAC Volunteering Award in recognition of their events such as camps, family holidays and the annual Cable Beach walk for children with cancer, in honour of Broome boy, Kyle Andrews, who lost his battle with cancer at the age of 11.

Andrews foundation chairman Matt Sear said it was excellent recognition for the foundation.

“I think it’s fantastic, it’s good exposure for cause and foundation,” he said.

“We do have plans to tap into the Perth market, of the 300 kids who’ve come through the foundation around 90 per cent live in Perth.

“It’s great for the people that put in the hard yards who have received recognition of their efforts.”

Other North West winners included the Development of Northern Regional WA Award won by Pilbara Meta Maya Regional Aboriginal Corporation of Wedgefield, Leadership and Innovation Award collected by South Hedland’s Dr John van Bockxmeer and Worldwide Sports Award won by Port Hedland’s Nathan Groch.
