Retail space cost is the real issue LETTER
Pop-up vans are not the problem in Broome, it is the crazy high rent retailers have to pay.
Every time a shop closes it is the rent that is said to be the main reason. The problem is there is not enough freehold land for retailers.
We need land that cannot be sublet. It must be owner-occupier.
Cut out the spectators and put a bit of competition into this town.
The Shire of Broome and the State Government have a responsibility to keep the cost of living down in Broome. Opening freehold land for retailers should lower overheads and prices.
There was talk of a homemaker centre. Set this up in the Cable Beach area, give the long-term Broome businesses priority and make it 60 per cent owner-occupier.
